Reston Town Center:
A Downtown for the 21st Century

Fountain Square

“Reston Town Center offers hope for providing meaningful centers for the hundreds of centerless suburban communities where the majority of Americans now live and work.”
— Charles C. Bohl

Market Street

“Reston Town Center is most valued as a downtown in the suburbs.”
— Robert E. Simon

Ice Skating Pavilion

“After several decades of exurban experimentation, people still desire density . . . they are longing for the qualitative aspects of urban life.”
— Tom Vanderbilt
“Reston has been a prototype twice: first, the model that was to be a critique of suburbia; more recently, the heroic campaign with the town center. The lessons learned are of permanent value to the nation.”
— Andrés Duany

Objective
KSI Services, Inc., asked us to create a book about Reston Town Center, to memorialize the design elements and planning principles that made it the most successful town-center development in America. An important aim was to promote this type of sustainable community development in a widely distributed book.

Process
Publisher Jan Cigliano worked closely with KSI Services to outline the contents and contributors of the book, its themes and messages, and the required research, archives, photographs, illustrations, and ghost writers. Given the project’s complexity, Academy Press devoted continuous front-line management.

Solution
Design and publish a book that reflected the primary message that Reston Town Center, while newly built, is a timeless urban place, a downtown in the suburbs. Contributing authors included individuals who worked on Reston Town Center—Robert E. Simon, Thomas A. D’Alesandro, Robert C. Kettler, Robert A.M. Stern—and noted urbanists Charles C. Bohl, Tom Vanderbilt, Philip Langdon. Publicity and promotional events aimed at national and regional markets.

Result
The book, Reston Town Center: A Downtown for the 21st Century, is targeted to a national audience of urban designers, architects and landscape architects, and the real estate community, and a localized regional audience of residents.
